Stephanie’s Leadership Transition Letter

Dear Friends,

I’m writing to share some exciting news about the future of Day One.

Following deep consideration and reflection on Day One’s many accomplishments, I will be stepping aside from my role as executive director as of July 31, 2023. I benefited from years of planning related to the values, trajectory and DEI efforts of Day One in making my decision, and I am pleased to report that the organization will enter its next phase from a place of strength.

I am proud of Day One’s achievements and am looking forward to its bright future with enthusiasm for all the possibilities that change can bring. After 20 years leading the organization, I make this difficult decision knowing that Day One will continue on a successful path delivering on our important mission for the current and future generations of New York City youth.

Our Board of Directors has set in motion a comprehensive leadership transition plan that prioritizes staff inclusion and will guide the hiring of a new executive director, ensuring a seamless and transparent search process. To aid us in this endeavor, the Board has formed a Transition Committee that is working closely with our staff and has selected Bridge Partners to conduct the search. I believe their expertise will be invaluable in finding an individual who shares our vision, values and passion for our mission and the young people we serve.

During the transition period, we are fortunate to have Lucia Rivieccio, LCSW, serving as the interim executive director. Lucia has been a vital part of our organization and a trusted member of our leadership team for the past year. She brings decades of experience in our sector, and I have full confidence in her ability to steer us through this transition with grace and expertise.

I will continue to support Day One during the transition period as “Founder & Development Specialist,” working to provide fundraising support and expertise to Lucia and the team. Rest assured that Day One remains steadfast in our commitment to the critical mission of ending dating abuse and domestic violence. We are dedicated to ensuring that this transition is as seamless as possible for our staff, enabling them to continue their invaluable work.

I am incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together during the past two decades, and you have my heartfelt gratitude for your continued support and trust during this transition period. Please feel free to reach out if you would like to discuss any of these changes in more detail.

Thank you once again for standing alongside Day One as we embark on this exciting new chapter.

With sincere appreciation,

Stephanie Nilva
Executive Director
