Staten Island-Based Community Educator

Job Summary: Day One seeks a dynamic full-time Community Educator based in Staten Island to join
our Training Department. The Community Educator will deliver preventive and informative workshops on teen dating abuse in schools and youth-serving spaces to young people in grades 6 through 8, school-based staff, youth-serving professionals, and parents/caregivers. The Community Educator will deliver Day One’s teen dating abuse prevention curriculum throughout Staten Island, conduct outreach, attend
professional development opportunities, and link young people and families to resources that aid in
prevention of intimate partner violence.

About Day One
For over twenty years, Day One has been the only organization in New York devoting its full resources to
preventing and responding to intimate partner and other forms of gender-based violence among young
people. Day One partners with New Yorkers 24 and under through preventive education, supportive
services, legal advocacy and leadership development. Our multi-disciplinary approach brings together a
highly collaborative staff with expertise in legal assistance, social services, and education service
provision. Through the Training Team, Day One educates young people in schools and youth programs
about gender-based violence equipping them with the skills they need to build equitable, peaceful
consent-driven relationships. Day One recognizes that anti-violence work is emotionally demanding and
professionally complex. We strive to create a workplace culture that invests in the wellness of staff and
leads to employee sustainability through an adaptable work setting and highly collaborative
environment. The person assuming this role must be comfortable working both in-person and virtually.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
 Conduct community outreach and awareness activities throughout Staten Island;
 Build and maintain relationships with schools, community-based organizations, and government
agencies throughout Staten Island;
 Build and facilitate healthy relationships curriculum addressing dating abuse, gender,
relationship stereotypes, consent, coercion, and more to youth in middle school, their
caregivers, school staff, and other youth development professionals;
 Respond to and coordinate workshop requests with school staff and community-based
representatives;
 Assist in the development of materials and workshops for use in the Training Department and
across the organization;
 Assist in tracking program data through the use of Salesforce and other data collection and
measurement tools;
 Maintain a flexible schedule, allowing for early morning, evening, or occasional weekend
workshops or presentations;
 Help create and maintain a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace and learning
environment, and commit to principles combating racism and gender inequality; and
 Other duties as assigned and needed.

Qualifications
 At least two years of relevant experience or a Bachelor’s Degree with at least one year of
relevant experience;
 Experience facilitating training, workshops, and/or other educational opportunities for young
people;
 Demonstrated ability to engage young people in conversation about gender-based violence;
 Emerging and/or established understanding of the nuanced dynamics of intimate partner and
other forms of gender-based violence and the systems to dominance and oppression that
sustain this violence;
 Ability to work with diverse groups of youth, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and
gender-nonconforming youth; immigrant youth; youth in care; and/or low-income
communities;
 Comfort working within New York City public schools, and demonstrated ability navigating the
challenges and opportunities that school-based work presents;
 Experience with communication and learning management tools such as Zoom, Microsoft
Office, Google Suite, Slack and Canva; and
 Ability to work independently and in a collaborative setting;

Salary and Benefits: Salary range is $55,000-$61,000, depending on experience and language capacity.

Serving New York City youth up to 24 years of age, Day One partners with youth to end IPV through a combination of preventive and direct services.
