Understanding The Relationship Between Racism And Domestic Violence

Over the past two weeks, protests supporting the Black Lives Matter movement have sparked important conversations regarding systemic racism in the United States. The continued violence and police brutality toward the Black community stems from a long history of social inequality. As a domestic violence prevention organization, we are dedicated to ensuring all forms of violence come to an end. It is important to reflect on how violence, specifically domestic violence, is connected to racism and oppression.

Day One is extremely passionate about creating a workplace that is healthy, inclusive, and enjoyable for our staff. My name is Lisa, and I am Day One’s current HR & Operations Intern. Sexual Assault Awareness Month

This April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and it is an important time to talk about the many ways sexual assault can appear in romantic relationships. It is important to note that just because you are in a relationship with someone, it does not mean you have given consent for any sexual activity. You can still be assaulted by someone you are in a relationship with, and in fact, sexual assault and domestic violence are closely linked. Often times, abusers use sexual assault as a way to intimidate and control their victims. In fact, victims who are sexually assaulted in their relationships are more likely to be seriously injured or killed than those who do not. Victims who are pregnant or in the process of trying to leave their abuser are especially at risk of sexual assault by their intimate partner.

How Light And Green Space Affect Domestic Violence And A City’s Inhabitants

Domestic violence has a major but often unacknowledged effect on many facets of the city’s environment. While not always apparent at first, the consequences of domestic violence greatly impact the mental health of survivors, and often it is a major contributor to homelessness. Similarly, a city’s landscape can be a transformative force in shaping crime in a city. While we may rarely think about it, new research has found that the way a city is designed and created affects the amount of violent crimes, including domestic violence, that occur in a city as well as the overall happiness of its inhabitants. A city’s access to light and use of green space both play a role in people’s behavior.

Understanding Gaslighting

Last month, the Dixie Chicks released their first single in 10 years, “Gaslighter.” Listening, I am particularly drawn to their repeated chorus line “gaslighter, denier/doing anything to get your ass farther.” Wikipedia defines gaslighting as a form of psychological manipulation in which a person or group covertly sows seeds of doubt in a targeted individual. A gaslighter denies the other person’s point of view and attempts to convince them it is not true. Often, this is done for personal gain, although it may also simply be a way of having control over another person. The term originated from a 1938 British play, Gas light, and has been used in psychological literature for covert control in psychoanalysis (Doorpat, 1996). In a 1980 book on child sexual abuse, Florence Rush summarized gaslighting as “an attempt to destroy another person’s reality” (Rush, 1992).
